PROGRAMS
High School Leadership
GOALS:
1) To introduce project participants to their personal power of living authentically, and to recognize and appreciate the uniqueness of everyone
2) To lessen/eliminate the need to compare themselves to their peers and compromise their own uniqueness
3) To educate the students in recognizing the difference between fear-based behavior (bullying) vs. compassion-based behavior (secure with self)
4) To empower the project students to model new ways of interacting with their peers
5) To empower all participants to trust and believe in themselves and to use their skills as leaders in the school, within their families, and in their communities
HOW IT BEGINS:
All students are selected and interviewed prior to beginning their training. The training begins with a mandatory full day workshop/low ropes course led by adults trained in Inside Out curriculum. The students, in groups of eight, will be mixed to encompass various academic programs, grade point averages, and social groups. The purpose of this intense time together is to level the playing field and eliminate any sense of competition among the participants. In the subsequent twelve weeks, the students will meet weekly during the school day for the remainder of their leadership training. By utilizing experiential interactive coaching methods, the primary focus is identifying each student’s unique gifts, talents, values, and leadership skills. The students are then called forth to be models of exemplary positive leadership in their school and community. *Students may volunteer or be recommended for the program.
FOLLOW-UP SESSIONS:
The next step is to create a group alliance, where all students co-create the foundation or framework for their continued learning. Agreements such as confidentiality, being supportive. non-judgemental, and keeping a fun atmosphere are included. An outline of the curriculum for the twelve subsequent sessions will also be discussed. These sessions may take place during the school day, once weekly, or for longer periods bi-weekly in the evening, if that timing is preferred by the hosting school. During these meetings a group coaching type format will be used. In this model, each student will be personally coached by the leader as well as be supported, encouraged, challenged etc. by their peers. The importance of the regular follow-up is to reinforce and build on the new perspectives, relationships, etc. that were established during the ropes course and the alliance session. (Anticipate 12 weekly sessions)
